Master Trainer, Peggy Calhoun, ACFRE will present "All I Learned About Campaigns, I Learned from my Cats." This presentation, based upon 40 years of conducting capital campaigns, covers key principles in leadership, constituents, goal setting, studies, Board giving, prospect research, gift acceptance policies, recognition, and other items necessary for a successful campaign. First presented at Planet Philanthropy in 2012, this memorable presentation offers sound advice and true stories with fundamentals of campaigning represented in over 50 slides.
From the lead author who wrote the AFP Ready Reference Series book on Securing Major Gifts, Ms. Calhoun holds an MA in Philanthropy and Development from St. Mary's. She became the 33rd ACFRE conferred in 1997.

PEGGY CALHOUN, ACFRE - President/CEO of Miller, Calhoun & Co.
Peggy Calhoun, an Advanced Certified Fundraising Executive, enjoys over 40 years as a full time fundraising professional. Upon graduating college at age 19, Ms. Calhoun began her career of helping others as an Executive Director of a 24-hour suicide prevention line serving the Ark-La-Miss area. She quickly learned how to raise the necessary resources to advance the mission.
Today, she is President of Miller, Calhoun and Company, a firm credited with having been involved in over $1,000,000,000 raised for over 350 charities. Clients include health organizations, social service agencies, environmental groups, educational institutions, and religious organizations. Services include philanthropic studies for the acquisition of capital, annual and endowment funds; board development; campaign management; donor development; talent acquisition; nonprofit management and interim staffing services. The firm, which began in 1997, is based in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.
In 1991, Ms. Calhoun received the first Outstanding Fund Raising award given by the Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP) - Fort Lauderdale/Broward Chapter. In 1990, she was awarded the Creative Fund Raising Award by the Grantsmanship Center. In 1984, Ms. Calhoun earned the Professional Staff Certificate from the United Way of America National Academy of Voluntarism. She is included in Who's Who in the South and Southwest; Who's Who of American Women and Who's Who in the World. In 2001, the Association of Women in Communications honored her as the first Woman of the Year in Fund Development and Special Events.
Her extensive staff professional experience includes raising $3.7 million in nine months for an art museum, overseeing a $60 million national campaign for the Diabetes Research Institute Foundation at the University of Miami-School of Medicine, and successfully concluding a capital campaign while increasing the endowment from $3 million to $55 million – for The Salvation Army in Fort Lauderdale. As a staff professional, Ms. Calhoun has also raised annual, capital and endowment funds for the Boy Scouts of America, YMCA and three United Ways. While with United Way, she was credited with tripling the amount of money raised in four years.
Ms. Calhoun is a former Adjunct Professor to St. Thomas University teaching a Masters level course in Fundraising in the School of Business. She has taught at Nova Southeastern University, Barry University, Rollins College, Hodges University and four nonprofit resource centers. As faculty and Master Trainer for AFP, she conducts workshops and sessions throughout the U.S. She has lectured nationally for AFP, Ronald McDonald International Charities, United Way of America, Boys & Girls Clubs of America, National Ovarian Cancer Coalition, National Planned Giving Council's Leave A Legacy program, and many others. In 1995, she created the nonprofit certification program for Barry University and the Florida Association of Nonprofit Organizations. Since 2004, Ms. Calhoun has served as AFP Faculty providing standardized teaching methods and expertise throughout the U.S.
Ms. Calhoun is founding member of two Florida AFP chapters, past President of the Broward Chapter of AFP, past President of the Gulfstream Chapter of the Public Relations Society of America, and former Advisory Board member FIU’s School of Journalism and Mass Communications. She graduated from Southern Illinois University as an Illinois State Scholar and Presidential Scholar with three undergraduate degrees. In 1994, she earned a Master of Arts in Philanthropy and Development from St. Mary's College in Minnesota with a straight 4.0 grade point average. In 1997, she gained international recognition when she became the youngest ACFRE – a lifetime conference awarded to only 115 of the 32,000 AFP members.
Ms. Calhoun is a frequent lecturer and published author. She was lead author for Asking for Major Gifts: Steps to a Successful Solicitation. This publication is in its second printing and is available through the AFP Ready Reference Series in Spanish and English.
